March 1st, Rockies Spring Training Game 9

Rockies fans excited about the ninth game of Spring Training were all excited for the same reason - starting pitcher Chase Dollander. The mere idea of having him in the starting rotation supplanting a Senzatela or Gomber produces energy that maybe this is the year the Rockies let the kids play before the adults get hurt forcing the hand of the organization. Sore must be the back of a young man with so much hope, yet so little expectation, to guide the new generation of Rockies starting pitching. The optimism is such that today's subpar performance has not deterred most from pencilling him into the opening week rotation. It's spring training, the details of this outing are not as important as holding onto hope, and that hope turns to his next spring training start being better. Not many players under Bud Black have gotten the Ezequiel Tovar learn as you go treatment, show us what you got Dollander.

Zach Agnos' collective spring training perfect game ended at 3 1/3 innings when he gave up a single. Another single later and his personal shutout streak was over. Speaking of streaks, for the second game in a row Drew Romo threw a runner out trying to steal second base.

Jake Woodford, who started the February 23rd game, relieved Agnos in the 5th inning. After retiring the first two batters, he gave up a single and issued a walk before collecting the final out. Woodford started his career in St. Louis where he shared a clubhouse with a former Rockies third baseman. Makes one wonder if he is here based on an endorsement from that chap or if this was just the place that offered him the best chance to pitch in the big leagues this upcoming season.

As forgettable of a day as the offense is having, reliever Angel Chivilli has already done everything to exercise the demons of this afternoon. Out of respect for Chivilli one will point out that prior to him taking the mound, the last nine Rockies batters have been retired and the offense has 9 strikeouts compared to 4 hits. Upon exiting the game, the Rockies found some momentum at the plate.

Thairo Estrada extending his hitting streak to five games with a single. Jordan Beck picked up his second single of the afternoon. Nolan Jones throws the monkey off his back by finally collecting his spring hit and wiping the goose egg off the scoreboard. After hitting a homer yesterday, Sean Bouchard hits a triple to collect two more RBI.

Luis Peralta mirrored his first outing on the mound setting the order down in order collecting two strikeouts along the way. Seth Halvorsen closed the game with three outs in which the ball never left the infield keeping his scoreless spring intact.

Zac Veen, Adael Amador and Kyle Farmer strung together singles to start the final frame pushing another Rockies run across the plate. The Rockies actually ended up outhitting the Dbacks and evening out how many hits they had versus how many strikeouts they had.
