March 2nd, Colorado Rockies Spring Training Game 10

Prior to first pitch, fans had to time to acclimatize to the news of Justin Lawrence being waived. What fans did not have to acclimatize to was the news Austin Gomber was being shut down. Does that make him the odd man out in the starting rotation for Chase Dollander? Is it really Dollander's spot?  In Gomber's spot today is my pick for Opening Day starter German Marquez.

Lindy's Sports Fantasy Edition ranked the Mariners Julio Rodriguez as "over-rated". He started the game with a double off of Marquez but would be stranded on the basepaths. In the second inning, rookie Colt Emerson hit 3 foul ball homers off of Marquez in what was a 14-pitch at-bat. Rodriguez followed that up with a much less dramatic 11-pitch at-bat with Marquez getting the upper hand.

Marquez's mound counterpart Logan Gilbert was having a much easier afternoon. Gilbert retired the first 8 Rockies he faced. The 9th Rockie was Sam Hilliard who drew a walk and that ended Gilbert's outing. Hilliard would not leave first base.

Jake Bird has made it three consecutive appearances issuing at least one walk. This was his first multi-inning appearance with his final frame being a 3-up, 3-down performance.

In the bottom of the 4th, Ryan McMahon (whom Lindy's magazine labeled underrated) hit his first double of the spring. Nick Martini picked up his fourth RBI of the spring bringing RyMac home.

Late offseason signing Scott Alexander made his first appearance in spring training. After the defence turned a double play, Alexander threw a wild pitch allowing the runner at third to score. Ahh spring baseball.

Jimmy Herget made it three consecutive clean inning appearances including striking out one of the best names in baseball, Rowdy Tellez. Jefry Yan turned in his third scoreless performance. The talk of course continues to be his strikeout celebration which actually had the Mariners broadcasters circle back to later on in the game to mention this is his "normal". Evan Justice struck out two batters in his first clean inning of the spring.

The Rockies scored 5 runs in the bottom of the 8th. Keston Hiura led off with a single to the outfield. Sterlin Thompson and Zac Veen reached base on hits that are only hits in early March. Adael Amador collected his 4th RBI by leaving his bat on his shoulder, Yanquiel Fernandez picked up his 3rd RBI in part to another edition of Mariners spring training defence. Kyle Karros is the first to hit the ball hard since the leadoff single bringing home two runners. Owen Miller capped the scoring off with a sac fly.

Juan Mejia would get the final frame on the mound. A lead off walk would be quickly erased by a double play and huzzah the Rockies win.
